The Do’s and Don’ts of Moving House with Pets

23 Jul 2025

Moving house affects every member of the household — tails and paws included. While you’re sorting boxes and hiring your moving vehicle, your pet is wondering why their familiar world is being packed away. Animals thrive on routine and predictability, so when things shift suddenly, it can lead to stress or behavioural changes. With a little planning and the right hire vehicle, you can help make the move calmer for all involved (fur, feathers or fins).

Do: Prepare Your Pet in Advance

Pets benefit from gradual changes rather than sudden disruptions. Preparing them early can make a big difference.

  • Keep feeding, walking and bedtime routines consistent in the days leading up to the move

  • Make their travel crate part of daily life well before moving day so it feels safe, not strange

  • Use familiar bedding or items to bring a sense of home wherever they go

  • Browse tips from SPCA New Zealand for support specific to Kiwi homes and animals

Don’t: Feed Pets Right Before the Trip

Feeding your pet just before hitting the road might seem kind, but it often backfires (sometimes literally).

  • Feed your pet around 3–4 hours before travel

  • Offer water before and during the move, especially on warm days

  • Pack dry snacks or treats for longer journeys, but use them sparingly

  • Bring essentials in a pet travel kit — think towels, leads, bowls and waste bags

Do: Choose the Right Vehicle for Pet Transport

Not every hire vehicle is suited to travelling with animals — secure space and airflow are key to a smooth journey.

  • High-roof vans are great for large crates or multiple cages

  • Utes with a solid, lockable canopy can work for short trips with ventilation

  • Box body trucks have space in the cab for securely placed carriers

  • Browse NHR’s full vehicle hire range to find options that suit your pet-sized passenger

Don’t: Let Animals Roam in the Vehicle

We know it’s tempting to let your dog ride shotgun, but it's not safe (or legal in some cases) unless they’re properly restrained.

  • Use a well-ventilated crate or a travel-approved harness secured to the seatbelt

  • Never carry animals in the back of a moving truck or unsecured ute tray

  • Place smaller carriers flat on the cabin floor so they don’t slide during braking

  • Avoid strapping carriers to seats if they’re in a zone with airbags

Do: Create a Dedicated Space in the New Home

While you’re unpacking, your pet will need their own spot to retreat and adjust.

  • Choose one secure room to set up a temporary pet zone on day one

  • Use blankets, food bowls and toys they already know

  • Keep them inside for the first few days, especially cats, until they’re more familiar with the new space

Don’t: Leave Hiring Your Vehicle to the Last Minute

When you’re dealing with pets, timing matters — so sort your transport early.
